What is Zakat in Islam?

“Take from their wealth so that you might purify and sanctify them” (Qur’an, 9:103)

Zakat is a form of obligatory charity in Islam that involves the giving of 2.5% of the surplus wealth and earnings of a Islam once a year. As one of the five pillars of Islam, Zakat is a means of obtaining spiritual purification and redistributing wealth in order to maintain equity and social justice. In Islam, Zakat also acts as a method of ‘self-cleansing’ by providing Muslims with the opportunity to distance themselves from material desires through practicing discipline and encouraging humility. As the prophetic teaching states, “It is to be taken from the wealthy and given to the poor amongst them”.
